Geunhee Choe

- Born in Daegu, South Korea, in 1981.

The artist has consistently engaged with plants, nature, and the ecological meaning of existence, focusing on the peripheries of the city—what is abandoned, traces, time, and memory. In particular, their work departs from a human-centered perspective, seeking instead to translate the inherent temporality and presence of objects, life forms, and environments into the language of art.

This orientation has led the artist to regard art not merely as a means of expression but as a tool for thought, through which their practice has continuously intersected with society. Looking ahead, the artist intends to further pursue the recovery of perception and the cultivation of ethical imagination—to make the invisible visible, and to revive what has been buried.

   - I am deeply grateful for being selected for this award. Currently, my practice focuses on weeds, reinterpreting the 18th-century analogue photographic process of cyanotype—developed before the invention of photography—in a contemporary context. Beyond my academic background, I have been working across diverse media such as printmaking, video, and installation, pursuing both technical exploration and the delivery of social messages.

In addition, building upon my homage to cyanotype, I am developing works that engage with weeds collected from historically significant sites, reflecting on notions of erasure, regeneration, and cyclical renewal. I sincerely hope for your continued interest in my work.
