In front of St Luke’s Church in Liverpool, a homeless couple asked me to take their portrait. The husband hesitated at first, but the wife met my lens with a quiet, unwavering gaze—one that seemed to say, “Look. Life goes on, no matter what.” It wasn’t until I revisited the photo that I noticed another couple in the background, locked in an embrace. They didn’t share the same hardship, at least not visibly, but both pairs radiated the same human warmth—the same will to connect, to endure, to love. Perhaps this is what equality truly looks like: not in circumstance, but in spirit.
