hard life

Silver Award

This photograph captures a man at the margins of the city, his hands etched with deep wrinkles—marks that resemble a map carved by time, recording a lifetime of labor. In the frame, he curls slightly inward, his fingers pressed against his lips as if seeking a trace of warmth in the cold air, or perhaps engaging in a silent dialogue with life itself. The black-and-white palette intensifies the emotional weight. The blurred street scene and bicycles in the background symbolize the constant motion of the world, while he appears still and solitary within it. His days working in a factory may now be distant memories, leaving behind only the worn lines on his hands and a profound exhaustion. Today, he seems to ask for nothing extravagant—only the bare essentials to keep living. For him, existence itself has become an act of quiet courage. This photograph does not aim to dramatize sorrow, but to shed light on the heavy, genuine stories carried by those often overlooked. Through the contrast of light and shadow and the compressed composition, I hope to reveal a silent strength: in a loud and restless world, it is often the quietest souls who deserve to be seen the most.
