The ceremonial Wang Yeh boat sets sail amid dense smoke and blazing flames, symbolizing the Royal Lords completing their heavenly patrol and returning to the heavens. The smoke obscures the crowd and the land, leaving only the vessel and its towering masts visible, conveying the solemnity and reverence of Taiwanese folk religion between reality and illusion. Through the interplay of light, fire, and drifting smoke, I hope to express the people’s devotion to the deities during the farewell ritual, as well as the enduring vitality of traditional culture passed down through generations.
